Project:

Privately Owned Public Spaces (POPS)

Privately Owned Public Spaces also known as POPS constitent a signifcant portion of “public space” in New York City. In exchange for building these spaces, developers are allowed to build higher and bigger on their real estate projects. In partnership with SAD.NYC (the Space Accountability Department), we brought our research about POPS to the Brooklyn Jail Support group who station themselves on a POPS across from the Kings County Criminal Court.

Through the evening, we shared the history of POPS, the design requirements and standards that POPS must meet, the status of the current POPS that we occupied at 130 Livingston Street, and examples of how groups have used others POPS in the past for activism and artistic interventions.

We followed the presentation with an activity for participants to create their own mini zines auditing the POPS they are currently in and dreaming about what the space could or should look like.

Check out the POPS resource document we created to see our presentation and learn more about POPS.
